Fashionistas Alissa Nichole and Christina Akomea joined us in the studio in style on Episode 29. They took us back to fashion basics by sharing tips on workplace wardrobe, style do’s and don’ts, skin and haircare upkeep and self-confidence. Take the time to groom
We’ve all had those I hope I don’t see anyone moments when we throw on the worst of our wardrobe. Taking the extra time to groom ourselves and dress up helps boost our confidence in and outside of the office.
When you look your best, not only do people notice, you actually feel better.
Know your fit and size
Christina expresses that when something is ill-fitting, it can completely throw off an outfit. Wearing clothes that flatter you in the right places starts with knowing your true size. Trust, it makes all the difference.
Fashion is all about the fit. From there, you can play around with different fabrics, textures and patterns that can help highlight your assets, and hide your problem areas.
Find a tailor
Alissa and Christina can’t emphasize enough the power of a tailor. They may be pricey, however tailors are a great investment since they bring out the best you. They guarantee your clothes are customized for your body shape, and most of the time that makes all the difference.
If you have trouble finding clothes that properly fit, a tailor would be well worth the visit.
Use your coworkers as guidelines
Did you know that women who take the time to groom are more likely to get promotions than those who don’t? Although it sounds a bit daunting, we have to admit that a nice workwear fit makes us look more polished. It elevates both our professional look and self-esteem so it’s a win-win.
Workplace environment plays a huge part in your professional style. If you’re ever struggling with whether or not an outfit is appropriate work attire, Christina advises to take note of what your supervisors and/or coworkers wear. Each workplace is different, and gauging the tone can save you from an office fashion faux pas.
Cleanse your closet
Get rid of the old to make room for the new. When you cleanse your closet, you’ll find out what staples pieces you have to work with and what you need to add that can take your wardrobe up a notch.
Have fun with it! Separate your clothes into the keeps, the maybes and the absolutely not’s. You may come across a few gems tucked in there that you forgot about. You can also sell or donate what you no longer need to your local thrift or consignment shop.
A regular declutter session keeps your style fresh and up to par.
Know what style works for you
Whether it’s Olivia Pope-esque or Riri’s casual yet chic look, figure out what your style is. Think of fashion as a reflection of your personality. Don’t be afraid to try out different looks to see which best reflects who you are.
Style is all about what makes you feel comfortable, and if it makes you look good too, well, that’s just a bonus.
